According to reports on various websites, the sequel has already been greenlit. Which seems a bit early without a script. Nor any clue on sales. Chances are, based not only on all the reviews and anecdotal evidence, this is going to be a grandslam sales wise. Usually studios wait until the first weekend to approve these things.
I hope its true but so far the "proof" has just been "I think I saw on ET that the sequel has been greenlit!!!". No indication of who said it to who in the program. It could have just been speculation. Hopefully the Michael Bay blog or one of the producers will pop up online and confirm or deny the news. Even better would be YouTube footage.
The box office sales will ultimately make the final decision but with the so-so reviews of Die Hard 4 and Harry Potter until a week later, Transformers is about to have 10 or so days of box office ownage. With previous confirmations of the cast locked for sequels and scripts being discussed, a sequel is pretty much a foregone conclusion.

Peter Cullen Confirms Sequel Plans
IESB.net is reporting that during an interview with Peter Cullen he confirmed that most of the main cast is signed for a 3 picture deal and was told by the studio to "keep next year open."
This is just more confirmation of what was already known with reports of sequel script in the works, talk of DeSanto wanting the Dinobots in a sequel and hopes of a sequel from Bay. Long story short, Dreamworks is behind this frachise is a big way so love the movie or not...there will be another to follow, probably in 2009.

Two Transformers Sequels Already Greenlit?
According to DigitalSpy, they are saying that Dreamworks "has given the provisional go-ahead for two more movies." Several of the principle cast members are already contracted for at least one sequel including Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel and Peter Cullen. There have already been reports that work has begun on the script for Transformers II but this is the first report of a 3rd being OK'ed. If this is true, for now I call it rumor, this shows an amazing amount of confidence in this film and franchise by the studio.

Two 'Transformers' sequels in pipeline
By Dave West
Studio bosses have given early approval for two sequels to the Transformers remake due out in July.
Director Michael Bay has also told how his version of the 1980s cartoon classic is heavy on the special effects and has cost some £50 million.
A trailer of the movie, to be released next month after several delays, is said to demonstrate impressive CGI as the Autobots go head-to-head in battle with the Decepticons.
Bay said he thought the combination of human actors and heavy effects had paid off. "It's got a lot of action, but at the same time it's very funny and it's got heart," he explained. "I only wanted to do Transformers if I could do it realistically."
Meanwhile, the DreamWorks studio has given the provisional go-ahead for two more movies.
